WELCOME ON BOARD NEW PATRON- DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES- NICOLA HOBBS

WELCOME ON BOARD NEW PATRON- NICOLA HOBBS.

Here at JUST A BALL GAME? (JBG?) we are very pleased to announce Doncaster Rovers Belles  goalkeeper NICOLA HOBBS as our latest addition to our patrons.
Born in Portsmouth Nicola’s family moved to Lincolnshire for her primary and secondary school years, it was here as a teenager she became aware of her sexual orientation. I was aware that I fancied the same sex at an early age but was confused and didn't express this fully till I was 16.

Football is only one of Nicola’s skills her full time job is that of a fire-fighter.
Nicola says. “I came out before starting work but all my colleagues have been fantastic with it. Some have seen it as a negative and say I am a tick in the box but I don't really care for attitudes like that so I ignore it or report it if it's offensive.”
“At the ‘Belles’ all my team mates are amazing with it as they are friends and I am who I am, just like they are, and I wouldn't change any of them.”

Nicola had this to say about becoming a figurehead for the campaign organisation. It's a massive privilege to be a patron to JBG? it is a very important cause and support mechanism that could change people's lives. It's an honour to have been asked.”

WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2015 CANADA- OUT PROUD and KICKING

JUST A BALL GAME?     MEDIA RELEASE.

                                                                                                                             ©   2011-2018.

                                          OUT,PROUD and KICKING.

It seems like stigma and prejudice around women playing football has been around forever as the sport fails annually in delivering on Equality Inclusion and Diversity.

This year’s Women’s World Cup in Canada will showcase elite players from across the globe, many of whom in the competition will for the first time be paid a wage (of sorts) to train and compete professionally.

While the men’s professional game has been reluctant to be fully inclusive and supportive of anyone within the game who identifies as LGBT its generally regarded that football is much more accepting of women who are lesbian or bisexual. But exactly how true is this?

With society in general a little more accepting of homosexuality these days, players are out to team mates, coaches and managers in numbers compared to say 10-15 years ago. But still very few playing at the highest level are out and proud publicly meaning they can be seen as much needed role models for young people to look up to and aspire too.

Asking why this is, we at Just A Ball Game? (JBG?) have been given a number of reasons. Some state it’s a non-issue, some are ‘out’ to their team but not to family members or friends, some are not out to work colleagues, some still fear being vocal about sexuality will affect endorsements or chances of being selected for team or country. Others quiet simply want to keep their private life just so, and others see a need to protect partners or family from bigotry or abuse

In celebration of those women’s players who have spoken to the media openly about their sexuality, here at JBG? we have produced a double sided poster of 14 players and a coach who will feature for their International sides in the tournament in Canada all of whom are OUT, PROUD and KICKING.

Coach:
Pia Sundhage-Sweden:

A former Sweden International Pia told the media, "There has been no problem for me to be openly gay as head coach in the USA team." She went on to say that she and her partner received a solid welcome in the U.S. "If people ask me about it”,  I answer “Yes I’m gay and that’s how it is. I’ve never come across any trouble for it as a coach in the United States or anywhere.  It was tough when I was twenty-years-old in Sweden, but even then I didn’t care.  This is me. Take it or leave it."

Players:

Nadine Angerer-Germany:
Nadine was quoted with this line when the DBF announced it was sending a pro-gay leaflet to all 26k clubs in Germany, “I want to tell you to come out, please. It’s really important we respect ourselves.”

Erin McLeod-Canada:
The Houston Dash keepers relationship with Ella Masar was very openly announced in a heartfelt blog story by Ella, and there is lots of love between them on social media.

Casey Stoney-England:
Arsenal defender Casey and long term girlfriend and former team mate Megan Harris have baby twins together.

Lianne Sanderson-England:
Arsenal and former Boston Breakers striker Lianne has always been very honest around her personal life while playing in the UK and US and has spoken about how great it is to be yourself and open to fans who meet her after games.

Abby Wambach-USA:
Team captain and all time record goal scorer  for the USA  Abby married former player (and Athlete Ally) Sarah Huffman in Hawaii 2013.

Megan Rapinoe-USA:
Megan ‘came out’ in the media prior to playing in the 2012 London Olympic Games stating:
“I just felt like I was leaving something out and omitting something and not being 100 percent truthful. Even though I never lied about anything. The world is sort of presumably straight, so I think I wasn’t wanting to be assumed [to be straight] or have people believe that. I’m obviously very proud of who I am. I couldn’t be happier with who I am. It was something that was important to me.”
As well as a footballer Megan is an advocate for a number of LGBT organisations.

Caroline Seger-Sweden:
Caroline as a 17 year old felt ashamed to be lesbian and tried to hide her relationships. Today she speaks out about it helping other young LGBT’s who may struggle with their sexuality.

Hedvig Lindahl-Sweden:
The Chelsea keeper openly speaks about her girlfriend and son in interviews for the media.

Katie Duncan-New Zealand:
Recently married her girlfriend (former New Zealand player Priscilla Duncan) and now plays in Switzerland to be with her new bride who works in Zurich.

Isabell Herlovsen-Norway:
She came out as a teenager saying it felt very natural to her and wanted to be true to herself, her family and friends have been supportive and she thinks it’s important to be open publicly.

Trine Ronning-Norway:
The 29-year-old defender made her debut on the national team in 1999. In 2009 she became team vice-captain. In January 2009, she married teammate Kristin Blystad Bjerke shortly after same-sex marriage became legal in Norway.

Nilla Fischer-Sweden:
Married her girlfriend Maria Michaela in 2013, she was named ‘gay of the year 2014’ in Sweden and is an official ambassador for the Stockholm EuroGames in 2015.

Lisa Dahlkvist-Sweden:
Team mate of Seger, Lindahl and Fischer Lisa who came out publicly back in 2008

Michelle Heyman-Australia:
Michelle another athlete whose quite open with her personal life on social media and says she really has never been in the closet and there was no real big revelation. It’s a non-issue for her, for her team mates. It’s a non-story.

Manchester City Ladies goalkeeper ANDIE WORRALL wins LGBT ROLE MODEL of the YEAR AWARD.

JUST A BALL GAME?                                              MEDIA RELEASE

Manchester City Ladies goalkeeper ANDIE WORRALL wins  LGBT  ROLE MODEL of the YEAR AWARD.

Here at Just a Ball Game? we are extremely pleased to announce that our patron, Manchester City Ladies goalkeeper Andie Worrall has won this year’s UK LGBT Role Model of the Year award at a presentation evening in Manchester hosted by the Lesbian and Gay Foundation.
Over 500 nominations came in through 8 categories and in excess of 6000 individual votes were cast for this year’s Homo Hero Awards in which outstanding people and organisations are recognised.
In winning the award Andie saw off some stiff competition in the category for Role Model of the Year from much more well established sports stars in Gareth Thomas, Robbie Rogers, John Amaechi, and LBGT personalities such as Clare Balding, Heather Peace and campaigner Peter Tatchell who were all nominated as role models.

A shocked and  very humble Andie thanked a number of people for their support over the years including her mom and dad and girlfriend after being presented with the award, and continued saying “This was totally unexpected, I was very proud just to be nominated and was here to enjoy the evening being part of a community event which recognises some great achievements across the UK.”
Andie continued, “I hope I can, as a patron of Just a ball Game? be an inspiration to young LGBT people who want to play football and other sports and show that if you work hard and have support around you playing at the top level is something which you can achieve.”
The on-going work at JBG? will see an educational pop-up banner and posters featuring Andie be available to hire and buy in the coming months as part of both the TIME FOR CHANGE-NOW! and THINK BEFORE YOU CHANT!  campaigns that we run, which aim to raise awareness around LGBT participation and inclusion in football and also challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

LGF POSTERS INTRODUCED AT HYDE FC

 HYDE FC introduce LGF posters.

Continuing their commitment to being an LGBT inclusive club, Skrill Conference Premier side Hyde FC have introduced the LGF's (Lesbian and Gay Foundation) support/helpline  posters and  booklets around the club.

This information is a small part of the many available information packs to some 400,000 plus LGBT people in the Manchester area  who access the charities resources each year. It's believed that this is the first time any football club in the UK has visibly displayed any such resources to reach out too a fan base of LGBT supporters and club staff alike with the information being displayed on notice boards inside club premises and also on stands for both home and visiting supporters.

The action taken by the club follows on from the partnership with Just a Ball Game? in previous years whereby they have taken a stand to raise awareness around LGBT issues, gender identity, and challenge what is seen to be homophobia and anti-gay, showcasing the "Think Before You Chant!" and "Time For Change-Now!" campaigns.

To find out more about the LGF please use this link:  http://www.lgf.org.uk/

UK HOMO HERO NOMINATION for our patron ANDIE WORRALL.

ANDIE WORRALL short listed for UK Homo Hero ROLE MODEL OF YEAR AWARD.

Here at Just a Ball Game? we are delighted to announce that one of our patrons, FA WSL and Manchester City Ladies Goalkeeper Andie (Andrea) Worrall has made a short list of 3 nominations for the UK Homo Hero-ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013.
The voting is now open for the general public to determine who will be the winner and the announcement will be made at an awards ceremony in October. The prestigious award was won for the first time in 2011 by Sir Ian McKellen.

VOTE here: https://www.lgf.org.uk/surveys/index.php?sid=95345&lang=en

We spoke to Andie to congratulate her on the good news and she had this to say: ”I am extremely proud to be a patron of Just A Ball Game? and now also proud to have been nominated for this award.Hopefully with the continued excellent work from organisations such as JBG? we can make positive contributions too lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.”

Andie has made 110 appearances  for current club  Manchester City Ladies F.C.  and also has 6 International caps under her belt  playing for Wales. She is currently the only 'out' in public LGB&T player in the game at elite level in the UK. Andie is involved with ‘Just A Ball Game?’ as one of their Patrons, doing interviews and photo shoots, who aim to use this work as part of an education package in the near future. It is hoped that by being involved in this type of work for a not-foot-profit voluntary community organisation like Just a Ball Game? Andie will be helping to raise awareness around LGB&T participation and inclusion and gender identity in football and also challenge homophobia.
